Weekend in Tuebingen

The best ideas for a short break in the Neckar town – Discover the historic old town, sights and activities
Tuebingen – the charming university town on the Neckar – is ideal for a short break or weekend trip. We take you on a tour through the old town, with its historic sights, charming restaurants, shops and cafes, and on a little detour to the water.
Walk through Tuebingen’s historic old town
Stroll through the old town, past the many historic university buildings, churches and shops. Beautiful half-timbered houses, winding alleys and romantic squares alternate with cosy cafes and special cultural landmarks.
Tuebingen’s “living room” and starting point for a visit to the old town is the 15th-century market square. In the middle of the square stands the Renaissance fountain with Neptune and trident, erected in 1617. In the background, you can admire the oldest building on the square, the town hall from 1435. The ornate facade with its astronomical clock immediately catches the eye, but there is also plenty of history hidden inside. In the Middle Ages, the ground floor served as the city salt store, prison and market hall with arcades. On the first floor, leather goods were sold, while the courtroom was housed on the second floor. Today, the town hall is not only a historic monument, but also a fascinating testimony to the city’s history.
Taste Maultaschen and Spaetzle – restaurant tip at Lustnauer Tor
Hearty, rustic, authentic – Wurstkueche at Lustnauer Tor is the perfect place to enjoy genuine Swabian home-style cooking. For more than 200 years, specialties such as Maultaschen, Kaesespaetzle and roast beef have been served here – accompanied by warm hospitality and real Tuebingen charm. And if you would also like to learn a little Swabian along the way, this is exactly the right place: “Naigugga, nahogga!” – simply sit down and enjoy!
Charming retro cafe to linger in
Fancy a cosy coffee break? At Cafe Willi, holiday vibes come naturally. The lovingly mixed interior with second-hand furniture and the Sunday music at the end of the week create a laid-back atmosphere. Of course, there is also excellent coffee, moist carrot cake and other specialties, as well as vegan and gluten-free options. Especially in summer, the outdoor area invites you to take a break and watch the bustling city life in a relaxed way.
Renaissance castle with fantastic views
High above Tuebingen rises Hohentuebingen Castle, an impressive Renaissance building with round towers and a view that is well worth the climb. Once the residence of the Counts Palatine, today it is home to the cultural studies and archaeology departments of the University of Tuebingen – history meets research here. In the “Ancient Cultures” museum, you can discover Celtic artefacts, Egyptian burial chambers and Ice Age ivory figurines. If you come on Sundays at 3 pm, you can join a highlight tour and, in good weather, let your gaze wander over the Neckar valley and the Swabian Jura.
Experience Tuebingen from the water
Climb aboard, drift along and enjoy – a punting boat ride on the Neckar is a must for anyone who wants to discover Tuebingen at a relaxed pace during a short break. You can board at the casino, and an experienced punting boat guide will show you the city from a new perspective. The entertaining city tour brings the medieval university town to life and makes it feel familiar. The perfect ending to a weekend in Tuebingen!
